The beer has been a firm favorite in Zululand and across the country since 1966. Traditional Zulu Beer, “Umqombothi” made from maize, maize malt, sorghum malt, yeast and water, also remains extremely popular.

- In South Africa Black Label began to take on a different tone with the anti-apartheid movement. This was in part due to the fact that at 5.5% alcohol it was stronger than other brands of beer that generally had 5.0%. The result was a advertising catch phrase –“only hard working students deserve an extra 0.5 percent.“
- The association of “black” with racial issues became a point of pride to the local Africans.
- It used to be sold with the slogan – “America’s Lusty, Lively Beer”.
- Another famous slogan in Afrikaans for Black Label – “Black Label sê die bybel” which means “The Bible says (one should drink) Black Label.”
- Some of its most ardent fans recently discovered that Carling Black Label is originally from Canada which really did not go down well.
- Carling Black Label is affectionately known as Zamalek. The term stems from when an Egyptian football club by the same name thoroughly beat local soccer team, Kaiser Chiefs.
- Fans associated the (Carling) colors of the club i.e. red, black and white, with being as strong as a Carling Black Label.
