Photo Images Mtunzini Zululand starts with the sight of the bridge on the N2 Highway over the Umlalazi River . In isiZulu “emthunzini” means a place in the shade. A very appropriate name for this laid back coastal town in Zululand that overlooks the beautifully blue Indian Ocean. The town is situated 130 kms north of Durban off the N2 highway.

The rare Palmnut Vulture can often be sighted particularly in the raphia palm forest.
Oystercatcher can be seen in the lagoon area of the town.
The lagoon area provides opportunities for many water sporting activities such as fishing. A tranquil sense of being very close to nature enhances the atmosphere.
Adjacent to the lagoon is a raised wooden walkway which allows the opportunity for a stroll (or in some cases a run) through the natural environment, including the raphia palm forest shown in this picture. There is an interesting Raphia Palm Forest Monument here.
